# Snapshot

## Overview

[Snapshot](https://snapshot.org/#/), a spinoff of Balancer, is an off-chain gasless multi-governance client with easy to verify and hard to contest results.

Snapshot derives its name from taking a "snapshot" of the Ethereum blockchain at a certain block number before voting opens. By having a fixed point in time, this eliminates the need to worry about malicious users moving their tokens to vote multiple times or someone using a flash loan to borrow a ton of voting power.

## Eligibility/How to Vote

In order to be eligible to [vote on Balancer](https://snapshot.org/#/balancer) proposals, you need satisfy at least one of the following:

* Hold [veBAL](/balancer-v2/ecosystem/vebal-and-gauges.md)
* Have someone [delegate](/balancer-v2/ecosystem/community/delegation.md) their voting power to your address

When a vote opens, click on the proposal in the Balancer Space, scroll to the voting section, and cast your vote. Your wallet provider will ask you to sign a message (don't worry, you won't be charged any gas).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://balancer.gitbook.io/balancer-v2/ecosystem/governance/snapshot.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
